In collaboration with the Office of Peer Recovery and Engagement, the National Latino Behavioral Health Association proudly announces a Facebook LIVE series. An interactive 60 minute webcast with special guest - Rocky Romero and Erick Pacheco, peer support and recovery experts who will discuss helpful tips and positive steps on improving continuum of care and recovery efforts. About the Presenters: Dr J Rocky Romero, LMSW JR Romero & Associates Dr. J Rocky Romero, LMSW is the CEO and owner of JR Romero & Associates, a training and consulting company he started almost 21 years ago that focuses on behavioral health program evaluation, consultation, and specialized training. He served as the co-chair for Governor Richardson’s New Mexico Higher Education Cultural Competency Task-Force. Dr. Romero has been a trainer and consultant for the NHL-MHTTC for the last 11 years, in addition he is a national trainer for Clare|Matrix, formerly the Matrix Institute, for the last 13 years. He is focused on teaching culturally appropriate treatment approaches while reducing health disparities for people of color and providing clinical supervision in rural communities. Lastly, Dr. Romero continues to research and present nationally on the intersections of racism, discrimination, the impact of racialized legal discourse, and the impact of the social determinants of health on people of color. Erick Pacheco, LMHC A New Awakening Rio Rancho I have been sober since November 15, 2005. I was diagnosed with P.T.S.D. and Poly Substance Abuse in 2006.I had the pleasure of working with NLBHA / Tenemos Voz in 2009. I have accomplished many goals during my recovery. I have obtained two Associate Degrees (2010), a Bachelors Degree (2012) and my Masters Degree (2016). I am currently a licensed therapist (Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Licensed Alcohol Drug Abuse Counselor). I am the owner of a thriving Mental Health facility called A New Awakening Rio Rancho, which is the doing business name of Re-Cycled Man LLC. We are fortunate to serve around 500 clients at this time and are looking to expand. I have had many lived experiences that many people do not recover from. I am a blessed individual.

This 90-minute online session discusses concepts and skills related to family therapy as well as the cultural values that may be incorporated into therapy with Latino children and adolescents. The speakers discuss a case that illustrates the application of structural family therapy with a young Mexican girl and their family using active listening, play therapy, cultural elements of familismo, spirituality, and personalismo in treatment provision. Challenges encountered during engagement and treatment with the client and their family will be described as well as resources and recommendations for those challenges. In July of 2021, the University of North Texas, at Dallas—The School of Huma Services presented and virtually hosted the two-day Cultural Lenses Symposium. The Symposium was sponsored by The South Southwest & National Hispanic and Latino ATTC, the African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence, and the Association of Persons Affected by Addiction. The Symposium was free of charge and open to students, multisector practitioners, researchers, and educators.
